Information About The American Indian Heritage Month Logo

Colors and what they represent: Four Directions/Life Circle;

Yellow
represents the East - where all things begin anew - constant rebirth,
spiritual as well as physical - also knowledge.

Red represents the South - where things grow to maturity

Black represents the West - reflection and insight (wisdom) of old age

White (or blue in some cultures) - represents the North - purification through death and rebirth, as with all things in nature. It sleeps/rests in winter, dies, but comes back to life in the spring.

To most American Indian people, Brown represents the Earth, Blue represents the Sky and Green represents Nature and the plant world. Traditionally, prayers (and honor) are offered to the 7 directions: East, South, West, North, Mother Earth, Father Sky and the Great Spirit.

The DRUM is the heartbeat of the People.
