The ChoiceCatch sourcing strategy is a detailed, comprehensive product-screening program. We are arming our procurement team with the best scientific information available to allow them to make the best choices in wild fisheries and fish farms.

GIANT’s seafood from wild fisheries

We purchase our wild-caught seafood from a variety of sources. The New England Aquarium completes extensive reviews of our most important fishery products, evaluating the environmental responsibility of the fisheries. This information is then used to direct purchasing away from problematic areas and shift buying towards healthier, more sustainable fisheries.

GIANT’s seafood from fish farms

We purchase the majority of our farmed seafood directly from the fish farmers. We are working with the New England Aquarium to define standards for our fish farms based on the best practices available. The New England Aquarium looks at a broad range of information when reviewing aquaculture operations. This information is used to direct purchasing towards the most environmentally responsible farms and to encourage farms we currently source from to improve their environmental performance.

Ever wonder what part of the world the seafood you’re eating came from? At GIANT we display the country of origin of all of our fresh raw seafood as well as indicating whether the seafood was wild-caught or farm-raised. Look for the display board in our seafood department.
