GIANT FOOD STORES COMBINES SERVICES WITH TOPS MARKETS, ANNOUNCES PROMOTIONS
CARLISLE, PA Apr. 16, 2003 GIANT Food Stores yesterday announced a number of organizational changes that will take effect June 1 between its operations in Carlisle, Pa. and those of Tops Markets in Williamsville, N.Y..
This is a final step in a shared services strategy that both companies have been working towards since 2000. It combines strengths in all operational areas allowing both companies to be more competitive on a long-term basis in their respective markets.
Tony Schiano will serve as president and CEO of the combined GIANT/Tops organization. Throughout his career with Ahold, Schiano has held many positions at ever-increasing levels of responsibility within several operating companies across Ahold USA, including Stop & Shop, BI-LO, the former Edwards and GIANT. As president and CEO of GIANT, Schiano has helped sustain GIANT’s 31 consecutive years of increased profits and growth. Schiano believes in strong business principles grounded in a commitment to doing what is best for the customer, associate and the communities in which the company serves.

Max Henderson has been named to the newly created position of executive vice president and general manager of Tops. Most recently, Henderson has held the position of vice president of operations and merchandising at GIANT and has extensive knowledge of the industry gained from his long career with Ahold, which began in 1982. Henderson will oversee operations, sales, merchandising, performance profitability and customer service, and will report to Schiano.
John Bussenger who is currently the senior vice president of human resources for GIANT has been promoted to executive vice president of human resources for GIANT and Tops. Bussenger will assume oversight of all areas of human resources at Tops. Bussenger joined Finast in 1974 as a store management trainee and after serving as a store manager moved into the labor relations and human resources field.
Additionally, Mike Sonberg has been promoted to vice president of operations and merchandising at GIANT. With 18 years of grocery experience, Sonberg has been part of the GIANT team for five years and previously held the positions of senior category manager of meat and most recently, director of meat and seafood category management.
Based in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, GIANT Food Stores, LLC employs more than 19,000 associates and currently operates 113 stores in four states. The chain operates under the name GIANT Food Stores throughout Pennsylvania and under the name MARTIN’S Food Markets in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
