Carlisle, PA GIANT Food Stores today announced that the chain has applied for a restaurant liquor license from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board for its Bartonsville GIANT. Pending approvals, the Bartonsville GIANT located at 3560 Route 611 will become the first Pennsylvania store in the grocery chain to sell beer to its customers. A variety of national brand and imported beer is expected be available for purchase by adults age 21 and older.

The announcement is part of the store's expanded eat-in and take-out restaurant offering, which will include hot and cold sandwiches, Panini, and an increased selection of beverages including beer.

"Pennsylvanians have made it abundantly clear that they would appreciate the convenience of purchasing beer when they shop for their groceries," said Rick Herring, President.

GIANT currently sells beer and wine in other states where it is permitted to do so. In addition, GIANT currently has wine shops in four Pennsylvania stores which are operated under a farm winery license held by Pennsylvania winemakers. Thirty-four GIANT stores have also been selected as sites for the PLCB's wine kiosks which will offer a new and innovative way for Pennsylvanians of legal age to purchase wine in a grocery store setting. These kiosks are expected to be operational later in 2010.

The Giant-Carlisle Division of Ahold USA, headquartered in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, is a leading supermarket chain in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia with grocery stores operating under the names of GIANT Food Stores and MARTIN'S Food Markets. For more information, visit and
