GIANT FOOD STORES ANNOUNCE OPENING DATE FOR LINGLESTOWN ROAD STORE

Grand opening date is set for October 28 in Harrisburg

Carlisle, PA Giant Food Stores today announced that it will open the doors of its third Giant Super Food Store on Wednesday, October 28 at 8:00 a.m. at 2300 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA. When the 97,700 square foot Super store opens in the Blue Mountain Commons Shopping Plaza, it will be the largest store operated by Giant. The new store replaces the existing Giant at Oakhurst Plaza, 4450 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, which will close for business on October 27 at 6:00 p.m.

Economic Heritage

The new Linglestown Road Giant Food Stores represents tens of millions of dollars in private investment in the Harrisburg area as well as more than 450 full and part-time jobs, an increase of approximately 250 jobs from the older store.

"In the face of tough economic times, we feel privileged as a company to be in a position to be opening new stores and employing more Pennsylvanians than ever before," said Tracy Pawelski, director of public and community relations. "We're excited to announce the opening of a brand new Giant in the Harrisburg area and thank our local neighbors for their patience along the way. We hope our shoppers absolutely love the combination of convenience and affordability."

Giant Food Stores has deep roots in Central Pennsylvania, founded 86 years ago in Carlisle. Today, Giant is the third largest private sector employer in The Commonwealth, employing more than 20,000 Pennsylvanians statewide. The Linglestown Road Giant is Giant's 8th store to open in 2009 alone including the company's first Giant To Go convenience store location, which opened in Manheim Township in April.

Store Manager Appointment Giant Food Stores also announced that Mike Strayer has been appointed as store manager of the newest Giant Super Food Store. Strayer is a 22-year veteran with Giant Food Stores having most recently served as store manager of the current Linglestown Road Giant. Strayer lives with his family in Dillsburg, PA. Introduction of Sarah Riddle, MS, CCN

Emphasizing Giant's on-going commitment to healthy lifestyles, Giant announced that in-store nutritionist, Sarah Riddle, will be available to assist customers with questions on healthy eating. Riddle, a certified clinical nutritionist, will conduct one-on-one nutrition consultations by appointment and will teach health related classes within the store. Riddle has a strong passion to help people learn how the right food choices can change their lives. She focuses on stress management, natural weight loss, and teaching people to have a healthy relationship with food.

"We are thrilled to have Sarah join our health and wellness team," said Pawelski. "We hope our customers agree that Sarah is just one more reason to make our store a centerpiece of their lives."

Community Center and Pinnacle Health

The newest Giant Super Food Store will open its doors to the entire community with the brand-new Community Center. In partnership with Pinnacle Health, the Community Center will offer a calendar of programs with a focus on health living, wellness classes, and more. Local organizations also have the opportunity to reserve one of the Community Center's rooms for their next meeting.

Located on the second floor of the store, the Community Center features a lobby and three meeting rooms of varying sizes. The rooms, the Susquehanna, Blue Mountain, and Dauphin, feature state-of-the-art technology, audiovisual capabilities, seating and countertop space and can accommodate anywhere from 15 to 75 people.

"While the store will be similar to our Giant Super Food Store in Camp Hill, we're very excited about the green technology used in its construction," said Pawelski.

Energy-Saving Features

The newest Giant Food Stores has been constructed with innovative building technologies to reduce energy consumption and the environmental impact of operations.

Skylights have been installed to reduce electricity consumption during peak daylight hours and LED lighting is used in many areas of the store, including overhead track lights, exterior store signs and in the frozen food cases. LED lights are longer-lasting and are expected to reduce wattage by half.

Approximately $250,000 was spent to implement sustainable technologies. Overall, measures to conserve energy by power consumption reduction are expected to positively impact the environment by reducing KWH usage by over 360,000 KWH annually, in this store alone.

Event Planner on Staff

The Linglestown Road Giant Super Food Store will have an event planner on staff to assist customers in making their party plans. Offering a centralized location called the Great Entertaining Order and Pick-Up Center, customers will no longer need to visit individual departments to place and pick-up their orders. For added customer convenience, there will be a register located in the area to ring up the customer orders. The Great Entertaining Order and Pick-Up Center will be staffed Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On-Site Fuel

Customer will find gas savings at a convenient on-site gas station in the parking lot of the new Giant. As part of Giant's Gas Extra Rewards, customers will receive 10 cents off per gallon of gas for every $100 spent at any Giant location using a BonusCard during promotional periods.
