Store pharmacists also provide suggestions for keeping healthy this flu season

Carlisle, PA Staying flu-free is a priority at this time of the year. The best way to manage flu is to prevent it through vaccination. Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets have partnered with Maxim Healthcare Services and Pharmavite to offer in-store flu clinics.

"Anyone who wants to reduce their chance of catching the flu can get vaccinated, but it;s important that seniors and those with certain medical conditions receive their annual flu shot," said Leigh Shirley, vice president of pharmacy. "Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare professionals and we see this as an opportunity to better serve the health of our communities. We encourage our customers to stop into their local Giant or Martin's pharmacy to receive this season's flu shot and help to ensure a healthy flu season."

Flu clinics will be scheduled beginning October 1 and continuing through November 14, 2009 at all Giant and Martin's pharmacies. These clinics will not provide the H1N1 vaccine, only regular flu shots, for a cost of $30 per shot. Associates from Maxim HealthCare Services will staff these clinics, and Medicare, along with several private insurance plans, will be accepted. Walk-in flu vaccinations will be available at select pharmacies. For a schedule of flu clinics at your local Giant or Martin's, please stop by the pharmacy or visit or

"In addition to offering customers flu shots, we have also taken extra steps to ensure that our pharmacies and health care departments are well-stocked to handle flu-related prescriptions and over-the-counter needs," added Shirley.

In addition to getting your annual flu shot, Giant and Martin's pharmacists remind customers of some tips to keep in mind this flu season to help prevent against the flu:

* Wash your hands and wash them often! To reduce the chances of both catching and spreading the flu, wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap for about 20 seconds or how long it takes to sing "Happy Birthday."

* Maintain healthy habits. Attention to one's overall health helps your immune system. Getting enough sleep, regular exercise, eating well and lowering stress can help protect against the flu.

* Get enough Vitamin C. Nutrients such as vitamin C, folate, vitamin B6, and carotenoids are important to the body's immune system.

* Cover your nose and mouth. When you sneeze or cough, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue to further prevent the spread of illness. If no tissue is available, sneeze or cough into the crook of your elbow, rather than your hands.

* If you are sick, stay home! Talk to your Giant/Martin's pharmacist about the best over the counter remedy and rest at home. Your co-workers do not want to get sick either!
