Partnership helps families access information on affordable health care coverage for Pennsylvania children

Carlisle, PA - As your prepare your kids to go back to school, remember health insurance is the one essential every child should have. The Pennsylvania's Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides health insurance to all uninsured kids and teens up to age 19. From August 17 - 23, 2008, it's CHIP Week at Giant Food Stores in an effort to remind customers about children's health insurance and raise awareness about the issue within the all of the company's Pennsylvania stores.

For the second year in a row, Giant is partnering with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, the agency that administers CHIP, to help deliver the message of affordable health care coverage to Pennsylvania families. Giant and CHIP want to make sure all Pennsylvania children have their immunizations, doctors' visits, prescriptions, vision exams, dental check-ups and more.

"Our sincere appreciation goes out to Giant Food Stores for their continuous generosity and support," said Insurance Commissioner Joel Ario. "In an effort to continue our growth in CHIP enrollment, we are reaching out to families in their daily lives to keep health care and CHIP top-of-mind."

"Many Pennsylvania families visit a Giant Food Store as part of their weekly routine, so having such visibility, particularly during back-to-school season, is a win for us and a win for parents who may be in need of health care for their kids," Ario said.

CHIP enrollment rose almost 7 percent this year and the program currently provides health-care benefits to about 175,000 children.

CHIP brochures, containing information about the program and how to apply, will be available at all Giant pharmacies beginning August 17. In addition, CHIP informational stickers can be found on Giant-brand chocolate-chip-cookie packages from the bakery. CHIP messages will appear in the Giant circular and in-store radio messages will remind parents that health-care coverage is affordable and available. Giants Tree Houses, the supervised play area for children ages 3 - 9 in select stores, will feature information, CHIP coloring books and a life-size cardboard cut-out of Connor, the young man who stars in CHIP commercials.

On Monday, August 18 the cooking schools at both the Camp Hill and Willow Grove Giants will host a "Back to School Healthy Eating" breakfast class from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. The class will include tips on reading labels as well as both healthy and economical breakfast ideas and recipes. To register for the breakfast class, parents can call the Camp Hill store at 717-724-1166 or the Willow Grove store at 215-784-1960.
